Bear Naked Tour Rocks the Tour (de Cure that is..)

Posted on June 15th, 2009 | by LJ & Jon | No Comments »

At the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure in Narragansett, RI this past Sunday it felt more like October than June…Late October…when riders began to show up at Pier Middle School around 5:45 AM. Those riding the longest distance (100 miles) had to show up the earliest for registration and a Bear Naked Granola Parfait. Everyone was in good spirits as they set out to raise awareness and funds for the fight against diabetes. By the time the last wave of riders went off around 9, there were more than 200 hearty cyclists plying the highways rural roads of the Southern RI coast in the cold morning mist.

Neither rain, nor cold, nor grey mist could keep us from serving a Bear Naked breakfast to riders in the 2009 Tour de Cure. when wind gusts hit 20 and threatened to blow the pop-up tent into the next county…Team Bear Naked adopted and moved under the shelter of the Pier Middle School’s main entrance… Tour on!

Loco Running 5K

People love Bear Naked Granola, especially when offered a free sample at the conclusion of a 5K race! That being said, its tough to compete with free beer…as the attached photo shows…(beer line is the line on the left). The good news is that most people did stop by for a Granola Parfait after they grabbed a cold one, and many were surprised at how good the (Heavenly Chocolate) granola complemented the Smutty Nose brew.

BSSC Dodgeball Night!

Last night I went out to the Boston Ski and Sports Club Dodgeball Playoffs! What a blast! We were serving our famous granola and yogurt parfaits and handing out snack packs, and I spent the evening chatting with the players as they entered and exited the gym for their big games!

Amidst a riveting philosophical discussion of the difference between an ‘enemy’ and an ‘arch nemesis’, yummy granola sampling (Vanilla Almond Crunch and Heavenly Chocolate were big hits!), I had a few minutes to poke my head in to the gym to watch a game and snap some pics! Check them out below!

Living Bear Naked at Earthfest!

Earthfest is free concert at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston put on by Radio 92.9 and this year was sponsored by Whole Foods, and it was a truly spectacular day! With over 100,000 attendees this festival features live music (this year featuring bands such as Soul Asylum and The Lemonheads), a kids stage, lots of food and vendors, and environmental educators that promote sustainability!

We were there serving granola all day and it was fabulous! The sun was shining, the music was playing and everyone was in good spirits! We were complimented on our use of compostable spoons and cups, and as always the reusable grocery bags we give away were a highly sought-after item!

I’d like to send a huge shout out of thanks to David Kampner and his team at Stonyfield Yogurt! Without their yogurt support we would not have been able to so successfully serve 6000 Bear Naked Granola and Stonyfield Yogurt parfaits topped with fresh berries!

The entire event was very well run and we hope everyone who came out had as much fun as we did!

Amazing week in Boston!

Whew! What a week! Monday was Memorial Day so we went out to Christopher’s Walk to support this great event that raises funds for diabetes research! Mid-week we had a fun night with our friends over at MetroRock rock gym! The Heavenly Chocolate and Mango Agave Almond granolas were huge hits!

Friday morning we got up early and went out to City Hall Plaza to serve granola parfaits to the hungry bikers who had rode their bike in to work at Bike Friday! Later that day we went down to the Hatch Shell to set up for Earthfest- which is where we were at all day on Saturday! To learn more about our experience there check out my Earthfest post!

Sunday Jim and I split up because there were 2 great events in the area and we didn’t want to miss either of them! Jim went up to the Tour de Cure bike ride in Gloucester, MA, a cycling event supporting the American Diabetes Association. I went out to Framingham,MA to support the runners and walkers at the Police Road Race benefiting PanCan and Pancreatic Cancer research! It was an amazing day- at the end of a truly amazing week, with lots of granola love!

sheila-atencio-photo1I grew up in the small mountain town of Buena Vista, Colorado and I was blessed to have the great outdoors right in my backyard (including 6 14,000 foot peaks!!!). I enjoy everything mother nature has to offer like hiking, fishing, mountain biking, rafting, and snowshoeing just to name a few. I believe a balanced life is the key to a happy and healthy lifestyle. Other hobbies of mine are soccer, traveling, yoga, and art. I like trying new activities and in February I even tried curling for the first time! When you see me at our Bear Naked tent this summer I would love to hear other fascinating sports to try or about your favorite hiking and fishing spots in the great northwest.

Stonyfield Yogurt!

We are big fans of Stonyfield Yogurt here on the Bear Naked tour (Bear Naked Granola mixed with Stonyfield’s Nonfat French Vanilla is scrumptious!), and we often serve it in our parfaits!

Over the weekend I was driving through New Hampshire and I saw a sign for THE Stonyfield Farms! I had to take a detour and take a look! Unfortunately they were closed for Memorial day but we’ll definitely have to take another trip out there to check out their Visitor’s Center and go on a Yogurt Works Tour!

I of course snapped a pic with the huge yogurt cup because it was too cool! ;)

Weekend at Wachusett!

Posted on May 26th, 2009 | by LJ & Jon | No Comments »

Saturday we got up early and drove out to Wachusett Mountain! If you aren’t from the New England area you might not recognize this wonderful little ski area, and during the summer it turns in to the perfect place for a trail run! The weather was pretty perfect for a run (cool and overcast early, then the sun came out right as the runners were coming in)! We handed out parfaits and and snack packs and everyone was fantastic!

jpg-chris-lee1My interests and hobbies include Tae Kwon Do, snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding, tubing, gymnastics, fishing, and mountain biking, hiking, and camping.  In my spare time I enjoy cooking, reading, rollercoaster’s, playing with my dog, listening to music, and stenciling.  I’m hoping this summer I can get more involved with road biking and rock climbing, as they have been on the back of my mind and look like a lot of fun.  I pretty much love living an active and healthy lifestyle.  I eat well, balance well, and live well.  I am Bear Naked.
