This past weekend we attended The Inaugural San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz. Saturday’s expo was windy to say the least. Our granola samples weren’t the only things flying off our tables. Our crates, bags, coupons took off in the wind many times. Their were periods when the Bear Naked tent almost took off like that house in Wizard of Oz! The Bear Naked team stabilized and stood their ground to fuel up the athletes courageous enough to take on the Alcatraz Tri.

Luckily the tri-athletes plea to Aeolus was granted and Sunday mornings race was practically windless. All the awesome athletes survived the escape from Alcatraz and grabbed some Bear Naked goodness at the finish line. Congrats to all the finishers!

Friday we headed into Boston for the last Bike Friday of the summer! This event encourages commuters to ride their bikes into work, and the rides end at City Hall Plaza with a free breakfast and a bike expo!

Sunday we drove up to Kennebunk, Maine to support the participants of the Fireman Triathlon! This great event has Olympic and sprint distances, free breakfast (Bear Naked granola, and pancakes served by the local American Legion), and a gorgeous course in this little coastal town!

TakeYourBike is a not-for-profit organization that was created in an effort to help raise awareness of the many benefits introduced by incorporating commuter cycling into your daily life. We promote the many positive facets of a commuter cyclist’s lifestyle including the health benefits, environmental sustainability, economic impact, and community mentality. The Border2Border tour is to be the first of many actions on our part to build a more active and conscious base of commuters – cyclists and non-cyclists alike.

On September 12, 2010, the TakeYourBike team will ride their bikes from Canada to Mexico in an effort to promote the viability of bicycles as a daily transportation vehicle, the sustainability of the bicycle as a mode of transportation in today’s global climate, and the many other positive facets of incorporating riding a bike into your daily life. Over 6 weeks long in duration, the Border2Border Tour will pass through Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Venice Beach, Los Angeles, Huntington Beach, and San Diego hosting awareness rides, running promotional events at local bike shops, and interviewing members of the commuter cycling community.

I’m thrilled to hear that we’ll be able to take some Bear Naked product out with us on the tour – I have been a fan since this past winter when I first sampled some of your products at an event at Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado. As an endurance athlete myself (I’m a competitive cyclist and triathlete), I agree – the bars do wonders on the long rides. We will be stopping at the Montlake Bicycle Shop on September 13th and leading a group ride from there at 7. Next stop Olympia and then South!

Apparently it’s like a triathlon except the swimming section is replaced with a second run. In this case it’s 1.6 mile run + 13 mile bike ride + 1.6 mile run. This can be done as an individual, teams, or even as a relay team. The powers that be have decided to hold their typical 5k, 10k, and 15k runs as well.

We are going to be there with yogurt and granola in hand to keep all these individuals and teams energized! Grab the kids; It’s hip to be fit!

A Film Inspired by the Legendary 1968 Trip by Yvon Chouinard & Doug Tompkins

After seeing footage of a 1968 roadtrip made by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and friends from Southern California to Patagonia, a young American adventurer named Jeff Johnson spent the next 10 years dreaming of following their footsteps. In 2007, Jeff dropped everything to finally fulfill his dream. Setting sail on what would become a six-month traverse of North and South America, he hoped to find unclimbed mountains and unridden waves. But as he traveled, his eyes opened to the environmental disasters that threaten these special places, and those who are working to save them.

Join us at Patagonia for this free event. Part of our Adventure Film Series.

Nature Consortium’s Urban Forest Restoration Project is committed to the long-term stewardship and restoration of the West Duwamish Greenbelt, the largest remaining contiguous forest within Seattle city limits. Foxes, red-legged frogs, hawks, and bald eagles are found within the greenbelt; an area which encompasses over 500 acres along the eastern slope of West Seattle that is visible from I-5.

Currently over 50 acres are in restoration, and around 5,000 volunteers a year are helping in restoration work. This work is done year-round, several days a week, removing invasive species, mulching, doing site maintenance, and planting in the wetter seasons. The main restoration goal is reintroducing native conifer species to the greenbelt. More information about this project can be found at http://www.naturec.org/restoration.htm and blog http://restoration.naturec.org/. More information about the unhealthy state of Seattle’s forests and why the work is necessary can be found here http://greenseattle.org/20-year-strategic-plan.
